Frequently Asked Questions

What type of wildlife will we see?

On our tours into Icy Strait you will see all sorts of Alaskan wildlife. The most common things we see are bald eagles, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and sea lions. There is even a chance to see brown bears roaming the beaches.

What should we bring?

Depending on the weather, you may want to bring warmer clothes, like a sweatshirt and possibly a light rain jacket. The boat will be heated and there is an overhang around the outside to help keep you warm and dry. If you have binoculars you may also want to bring them. We will have a couple pairs on the boat for passenger use. We will provide a light snack and beverages. If you think you’ll want more than that please bring your own food.

Where will we meet to begin the tour?

When you arrive at Icy Strait Point, you will arrive at one of two docks. If you arrive at the Ocean Landing you will walk through the Adventure Center Building. From there, follow the signs to the excursion hub. It will be about a 5-10 minute walk on a gravel path. If you arrive at the Wilderness Landing, walk to the gondola and take a free 5 min ride into the port. After the gondola ride, walk on the gravel path to the Excursion Hub. Once in the Excursion Hub, we will be there waiting with a sign that says “Hoonah Whale Tours” once the whole group is together, we’ll drive through town to the boat, about a 5 minute drive.

What will the weather be like?

The weather in Southeast Alaskan can be hard to predict. There will be some days where it is sunny and between 70-80 degrees and others where it is colder and raining. Please dress according to the weather you see when you arrive but bring an extra layer in case it changes throughout the day.

How big is the boat and do you provide safety gear?

The Thor Too is a 31.5 foot catamaran. The boat will hold 6 passengers making your tour group smaller and more personal. It has comfortable seating and a walk around deck with an overhang so even if there is bad weather you will be somewhat protected and still able to see the whales, eagles, seals and sea lions, and hopefully bears. The boat is equipped with all of the proper safety gear. The boat will be a fast smooth ride and great for sightseeing.
